Windows 11

Microsoft OS

91×ÔÅÄ the upgrade

Upgrade for university-managed devices and campus computers.

Microsoft Windows 11 is the new and improved operating system that will be rolled out to university-managed laptops and desktops, including computer labs, from November 2024 onwards.

Windows 10 support will officially end on October 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, bug fixes, or technical assistance for Windows 10.

Upgrading to the Windows 11 version will ensure users are supported with the latest features, security, and functionality to support collaborations, teaching and learning.

Key benefits:
  • New interface – simple design and use
  • Improved performance - login experience, better MS Teams integration
  • Improved productivity - software request and management processes
  • Enhanced security – including encryption for both desktops & laptops, essential for protecting University sensitive data
  • Accessibility – new accessibility features

Windows 11 - 91×ÔÅÄ monthly updates on your device

📢 Windows monthly update behaviour on your device

Your Windows 11 device is set to use the default update settings from Microsoft. This means:

  • ✅ Updates will be downloaded and installed automatically by Windows.
  • 🕒 Windows will try to install updates outside of your active hours to avoid disruptions.
  • 🔄 If a restart is needed, you’ll get a notification and can schedule a time that works for you.

You don’t need to do anything—Windows will take care of updates in the background to help keep your device secure and up to date.

If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback please contact the IT Service Desk at IT.Services@lboro.ac.uk

Join the Early Adopters Programme

We’re looking for volunteers to join our Windows 11 Early Adopter Programme — a small community of colleagues who receive Microsoft monthly updates slightly ahead of wider rollout.

If your role involves specialist or business-critical software, your input would be valuable. This initiative focuses on software used for teaching, research, or operations that is owned or purchased by a School or Professional Service area.

What’s involved?

  • Early Adopter devices receive the updates 7 days ahead of wider rollout
  • Participants continue using their device as normal and let us know if they spot any unexpected issues

By volunteering, you’ll help support a reliable, secure, and stable Windows 11 experience for colleagues across the University.

Software delivered through Software Centre is excluded, as it is managed through a separate assurance process. However, if you are unsure whether your software is suitable for inclusion, please submit the details and we will review and confirm whether it falls within the scope of the Early Adopter Programme.

If you would like to support this initiative and join the Early Adopters Programme, please complete the form below:
